The Lacquer Cabinet

The "Lackkabinett" (Lacquer Cabinet) on the second floor of the former library wing conveys an impression of the former splendor of the appointments. Which room the cabinet was originally intended for can no longer be reconstructed today. The cabinet was described as early as 1712 by contemporaries as one of the attractions of the residence.

The Lacquer Cabinet in Rastatt was probably painted by Johann Adalbert Cratochwill, who received large payments on account around 1706 in the service of the Margrave and his wife.  The artist had already completed a cabinet for Schlackenwerth Palace in 1698.  In 1709 he also created a lacquer cabinet for Sternberg Palace in Prague, and a few years later he was in the service of Emperor as an "Indian chamber painter".

In addition to those in Ludwigsburg and Bamberg, the Lacquer Cabinet in Rastatt is among the earliest German room appointments to document the Far Eastern fashion in a court atmosphere in the early 18th century.
