Paintings, graphic depictions, weapons and military equipment provide an insight into the history of the German military from the Middle Ages to World War II. One focus is the extensive collection of uniforms from the years 1871 to 1914. Models in which the arrangement of the troops, fortified camps and battle positions are reconstructed on the terrain with tin figures illustrate military conflicts like the Battle of Slankamen, in which Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm 1691 achieved his most important victory over the Ottoman army.
The "Wehrgeschichtliches" (Military History) Museum (WGM) has been located in the southern wing of the palace along the Court of Honor - the area of the former library - since 1956. In 1984 it was expanded to include the rooms on the southern ground floor of the Corps de Logis.

The commemorative site was opened in 1974 and traces the history of organized freedom movements back to the late Middle Ages. The exhibition focuses on the struggles for freedom since the French Revolution. In addition, the central role of the fortress in Rastatt in the Baden Revolution of 1848/49 is covered and made understandable using paintings and graphic depictions.
